Housing is more than a roof over your head. It's safety and security.

The number of people who are at risk of homelessness because they can't afford to pay the rent is rising. Ontario's average rent has increased 50 percent faster than the rate of inflation. Twenty percent of renters in Ontario spend 50 percent or more of their income on rent and are in real danger of losing their homes. Forty-two percent spend more than 30 percent, which is outside the accepted level of affordability.

According to The Golden Report, the widely respected work of a task force on homelessness, half of the people in emergency housing beds each night are not transients or people facing temporary crises. They are people who live in emergency housing year after year because they lack the daily living, medical, or counselling supports to live independently.

YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo offers emergency housing at Mary's Place and permanent, supportive housing at the Lincoln Road and Benton Street Apartments, three of our YWCA Turning Point Programs for Women.
